The Story Behind the Stories
Born in Stamford, Lincolnshire, and raised in the Suffolk village of Blundeston, James Mayhew's creative journey began early, surrounded by his pilot father's adventurous tales and his grandfather's treasure-hunting stories. His sister, Kate, also proved a significant inspiration, becoming the namesake for his iconic character. Mayhew credits a childhood trip to a London art gallery and his time as a pavement artist recreating famous works as key inspirations for his first book, blending his love for art with imaginative storytelling. He studied illustration at Maidstone College of Art, where his unique approach to storytelling through art began to flourish.
A Life in Books
James Mayhew's illustrious career in children's literature began with the publication of 'Katie's Picture Show' in 1989, a pioneering book that allowed children to step inside famous paintings. This launched the hugely popular 'Katie' series, which continues to introduce masterpieces to young audiences worldwide. He also created the beloved 'Ella Bella Ballerina' series, bringing classical ballet stories to life. Mayhew is a versatile collaborator, having illustrated the 'Gaspard the Fox' series by Zeb Soanes and the 'Mrs Noah's Pockets' series by Jackie Morris. His work has garnered significant recognition, including The New York Times Award in 1994 for 'The Boy and the Cloth of Dreams' and the inaugural Children's and YA Polari Prize in 2022 for 'Nen and the Lonely Fisherman,' written by Ian Eagleton. Beyond books, James is renowned for his captivating live performances, where he paints to classical music with major orchestras.
