Meet Michael Bond

Michael Bond, the beloved English author, brought joy to millions with his iconic creation, Paddington Bear. Known for his warm storytelling and gentle humour, Bond's tales of the marmalade-loving bear from Peru have captured the hearts of readers across generations, making him a cherished figure in children's literature.

The Story Behind the Stories

Born in Newbury, Berkshire, and raised in Reading, Michael Bond's literary journey began during his military service in Cairo in 1945, where he sold his first short story to *London Opinion* magazine. His creativity was famously sparked on Christmas Eve 1956 when he spotted a lonely teddy bear in a shop window, which he bought for his wife and named Paddington, as they lived near Paddington Station. This serendipitous encounter, combined with his memories of World War II evacuee children arriving with labels and suitcases, profoundly shaped the endearing character and his adventures. Bond's background as a BBC television cameraman also honed his observational skills, contributing to his distinctive and widely loved writing style.

A Life in Books

Michael Bond's illustrious career truly took flight with the publication of *A Bear Called Paddington* in 1958, introducing the world to the polite bear from "darkest Peru". This instantly beloved book launched a hugely successful series, with titles like *More About Paddington* (1959) and *Paddington Helps Out* (1960) quickly following. By 1965, the success of his books allowed him to become a full-time writer. Beyond Paddington, Bond also charmed readers with the *Olga da Polga* series about a guinea pig and delighted adults with his *Monsieur Pamplemousse* culinary mysteries. His significant contributions to literature were recognised with an OBE in 1997 and a CBE in 2015 for services to children's literature.
